When it comes to living in Denver, our backyard is full of adventures! So deciding what to do on a weekend can be a little overwhelming. If you want to true Colorado experience, here are a few must-trys!
1. Conquering A Fourteener
You don’t need to be super athletic to hike above 14,000 feet. Mount Bierstadt (14,060 feet) is one of the easiest among Colorado’s 53 fourteeners. It has a wide trail taking you through high-altitude swamps, meadows and boulder fields. The trailhead conveniently starts at Guanella Pass near Georgetown, which is a short drive from Denver.
2. Experiencing A Concert At Red Rocks
Red Rocks Amphitheater is a national, musical landmark! Some of the greatest concerts, like U2 in 1983, have occurred in this natural outdoor venue. It’s definitely a favorite for many rock stars and a preferred spot for Coloradans! We recommend you get there early and enjoy a picnic (or an intense step climb session) and soak in that view of the Denver skyline!
3. Touring The Ruins Of Mesa Verde
Colorado is home to impressive ancient ruins! The cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park near Cortez are quite a marvel. Take a guided tour from a park ranger to learn more about the people who once lived within the 600+ homes. While in Cortez also visit the Ute Mountain Tribal Park, where a tribe member will explain their ancient cave dwellings and people’s history (wall paintings and petroglyphs).
4. Soaking In A Hot Spring
On a wintry day, sinking into one of Colorado’s natural thermal pools is the best! They can be enjoyed in different ways, like dipping in Conundrum Hot Springs after the 8.5 mile hike (one way) to the pool, checking into a resort spa like Mount Princeton or going au naturel after dark in Steamboat’s Strawberry Hot Springs.
5. Snowboarding Sand Dunes
At the Great Sand Dunes National Park in the San Luis Valley, a fun tradition is hiking to the top of a dune and snowboarding down (but you can walk like most people). Open 24 hours a day, so you can travel the park at brilliant times like sunrise, dusk or under a moonlit sky.
